The “IDA-KI” research project was initiated to evaluate Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods on real building structures. As part of this project, a research bridge was constructed on the premises of Hentschke Bau GmbH near Bautzen. This three-span prestressed concrete bridge was damaged on May 5th to 7th (see SPP100+ News 04.05.2025) by load tests and targeted prestressing steel separations in field 2 (see Figure 1).
Sub-project C03/E03 carried out ambient output-only measurements on the IDA-KI bridge for several hours before and after the damage. Field 1 and 2 were each equipped with 16 acceleration sensors. The measurements were evaluated using the SHM method State Projection Estimation Error (SP2E). Damage can be localized using the damage localization indicator PdV, which represents the average power difference between the reference and monitoring measurements. Large power differences indicate damage. Based on the indicator, the damage to the western axis in field 2 can be clearly localized (Figure 2).
